Unhinged Primarch First Impressions Part Two
Welcome to part two of the Primarch First Impressions series!
This was a little project where I compared the first impression I had of each Primarch, and how that changed once I learned a bit more about them.
Because I’m still pretty new to Warhammer, these thoughts are still fresh in my head, so thought it would be fun to record them somehwere.
In this post we’ll go over the next nine Primarchs, starting with our good friend Ferrus!
Ferrus Manus
First impression: Ferrus Manus struck me as the strong silent type at best, and a tiny bit boring at worst.
Current opinion: He is SUCH a sweetheart.
Of all the Primarch’s I feel like Ferrus is top tier boyfriend material. He’s a little rough around the edges but he works hard, has a creative streak (he makes beautiful weapons) and is a bit of a softie underneath all the gruffness.
Bloody Fulgrim.
Lorgar
First impression: I thought I was going to LOVE the Word Bearers, simply because their chapter symbol was a book- a Primarch that loves reading? That is my vibe!
Current opinion: Lorgar is the kind of dude that sits in solence in the corner of the room, but rather than being that quiet kind of mysterious, he just manages to make everyone uncomfortable.
One thing I do like is his scary level of intelligence- dude knows how to work the people around him. Kind of like Regina George from Mean Girls.
Guilliman
First impression: Back when I knew nothing about space marines, I thought HE was the main character because his chapter was on every single box.
I thought he was so focussed on abiding by the rules that he was a little boring with no personality other than, ”do what daddy says”.
Current opinion: Guilliman is actually a bit of a sweetheart. There was a lovely interaction he had with Corax where he invited him over to his place for a chat.
Corax was amazed that the place was built to accommodate a Primarch’s size, and he could walk through the door without needing to stoop and sit comfortably in the chair. It was just so cute, and Guilliman was being such a lovely big brother figure to Corax, it really made me like him.
Mortarion
First impression: Is that a scythe??
I thought Mortarion was that badass quiet but deadly type. He reminds me of that scene in the Simpsons when the Yakuza are fighting the Italian mafia in the front yard and Homer says “that little guy hasn’t done anything yet- look at him, he’s going to do something, and you know it’s going to be good!”
That’s how I felt about Mortarian.
Current opinion: I still like Mortarian but he’s way more whiney than I expected him to be. He is significantly more dramatic than the two emo Primarchs, and that’s saying something.
I do love his fighting style because it’s just so cold and efficient, it’s also fitting that he doesn’t appreciate ornamentation or flair on any of his ships.
Magnus the Red
First impression: Clifford the Big Red Dog. I can’t help it.
Current opinion: Magnus is still one of the Primarch’s I don’t know a whole lot about, but from what I have read I can’t help but like him. He tries to do the right thing, even though it fails pretty badly.
He seems like the big friendly guy of the group, but why the massive horned armour nipples???
Horus
First impression: Why did he become the Warmaster? He seems kind of boring.
Current opinion: Oh how happy I was to be wrong. Horus is another one of those scarily intelligent characters.
One thing I love about Horus is how quickly his mood changes. This is not a trait I like in people at all, but it works so very well for Horus and makes reading his scenes more interesting because you never really know if he’s going to snap.
From what I’ve read so far, he is a consistently well written character, and I’m looking forward to reading more (just not about what he does to Sanguinius).
Angron
First impression: Generic angry guy. I also thought the butcher’s nails were dreadlocks.
Current opinion: I have so much empathy for Angron. He arguably had the worst upbringing out of all his brothers, and the Emperor messed up dramatically when they were reunited.
I like Angron, even though he can feel like a one-dimensional liability at times. The whole concept of the butcher’s nails is fascinating, and he’s probably the creepiest looking demon Primarch.
Vulkan
First impression: When I first started reading about Warhammer, multiple people said they thought I would like the Salamanders.
I thought Vulkan was the nicest Primarch of the bunch, just a big happy guy who would take over cooking at a barbecue, wearing a cute apron and a little hat.
Current opinion: My opinion of Vulkan didn’t really change.
I still think he’s one of the nicest Primarchs, and the eternal thing is a pretty nice ability to have (unless you run into Curze).
Corvus Corax
First impression: The claws. The wings. Dark shaggy hair. Edgar Allan Poe references. Corax made a very good first impression on me.
Current opinion: Corax is without a doubt my favourite Primarch. He is such a quiet, kind, gentle soul, and he genuinely cares about his sons.
There was a part in his novel where his marines were overrun by a civilian population infected by a virus (essentially zombies) and he flew into the crowd and carried his marines away one by one (couldn’t save them all, but he tried!).
Also retreats to his tower to have a little meltdown, can relate.
Alpharius
First impression: Gorgeous armour.
Current opinion: TWINS? I love that! It’s cute that they’re both considered short, making the blending in and sowing confusion tactic so much easier.
Alpharios and Omegon are two of the more interesting characters because you never really know what is true about them and what’s false, which makes for a fun storytelling device.
I just don’t like that they messed with Corax of all people.
Thank you for reading along and joining me on this random Primarch reflection!
It’s funny to see how my opinions have changed over time, and I’m looking forward to continuing to read more and seeing what other thoughts change.
Much love x
