The Little Necron That Started It All

One question I get asked all the time is “how did you get into Warhammer?”

I had been aware of Warhammer for ten years before I actually started building, painting and playing 40k.

Unfortunately for the entirety of those ten years, I knew precisely two things about Warhammer:

  1. Necrons were “grumpy sleepy robots”

  2. Space Marines.

That was it. Until I was introduced to Vermintide.

Vermintide had everything- rat monsters with warpfire throwers for arms, sneaky assassins, disgusting zombie things, magic, fire, swords, funny characters- I was hooked.

Once I started playing and was properly introduced to the idea of Skaven and Chaos, I started reading about the world of Warhammer Fantasy (RIP) and eventually 40K.

I’m sure you can appreciate how intimidating the sheer amount of lore is to a beginner, but eventually I got enough of an understanding to actually want to try painting some of my own minis.

For a long time I had been looking for a creative hobby that I could do in the evenings to wind down after work, and this seemed to slot into place and fil that need nicely.

When asked what I wanted to start with, I thought back to all those years ago and chose Necrons.

I ended up with a little Necron kit with three models and some paints, perfect for seeing if this was actually something I would enjoy or not.

Enjoy it I did, and here we are.

Necrons will always have a special place in my heart, and I have amassed a decently sized army of them (mostly unpainted but who doesn’t have a huge pile of shame?).

People encouraged to share my painting via Instagram which was, and still is honestly, a terrifying concept.

I remember posting that first little Necron, affectionately named “Little Buddy” and being petrified that people would be mean about it.

Thankfully I have found the community to be incredibly warm and welcoming, and while I still get nervous showing my work, I love the sheer amount of support and encouragement you guys send my way.

I hope to give those good vibes back to any new painters I come across.

Over the last two years I have learned so much about painting, building and the lore. So. Much. Lore.

Thank you to everyone who has helped me grow my skills, and show encouragement along the way.

You’re all so kind x
